Q: why is there a statue of limitations on child sex abuse crimes?
A: As Syracuse University and the sex discrimination Bill Conlin scandal expands, victim advocates have found an unexpected silver lining: more people came forward with accounts for the abuses and seeking justice, even decades later.
That means most of the cases of sexual violence are falling under the old standards: five years after the victim’s 18th birthday. For victims of sex abuse are now in their 30s, 40s and 50s, the Criminal Court could offer no solace. Civil courts are stricter, allowing the claim only to the victims turned out to be 30.
No charges have been filed against former Syracuse basketball coach Bernie fine or sports columnist Conlin as the deadline for filing the complaint has passed. But with Penn State in the forefront of attention, many countries have called for a review of the Statute of limitations in cases of sex discrimination.
